On Jan. 4, 1968, The Cass City Chronicle printed the “AAA Michigan 1968 Guide to Winter Sports Fun.” It listed Big Powderhorn, near Bessemer and Ironwood, as having 11 slopes covering all abilities, 2 double chairlifts, T-bar and 2 rope tows.
Big Powderhorn now claims 33 runs and 3 terrain parks, 9 double chairlifts and a beginners handle-tow, with snow-making covering 93% of the 253 acres. They are scheduled to open on Dec. 10, 2011 for the 2011-12 season.
The appraisal firm, Closser Associates, reports that they brokered an offer for the sale of the resort in 2008. They also report that the lodging association had a water sufficiency problem back in 2000, potentially affecting property values.
