Thanks to Roc Roney, we have a NEW LOST Ski Area, a small, municipal area in what is now Grosse Pointe Shores: Vernier Hill. Sometime in the 60’s, the village installed a rope tow on the north slope of a mound of dirt excavated during the construction of I-94. The hill was near the old, Vernier School building ( unused at that time) and City Hall on land that had been part of the old Vernier farm that dated from French colonial days. The hill and tow operated during the 60’s and 70’s, and the local kids built jumps and worked on their back-scratchers and daffys. The rope was removed in the 70’s and the hill was shortened in the 80’s, but still appears on a list of sledding hills in the Detroit area.
