Norway Mountain – Norway
Norway Mountain , between Norway and Vulcan, is one of the premier ski teaching and learning locations in the Big Snow Country of the western Upper Peninsula. They boast the largest ski school in the area and the largest alpine race program. They have two double chairlifts, one serving expert terrain and the other intermediate and expert terrain. They have a triple chairlift serving beginner and intermediate terrain. They also have a handle lift under the upper part of the middle chair which seems to serve the racing hill.
Norway Mountain’s web site dates their area as opening in 1993. I think they were the successor area to a prior one perhaps called Briar Mountain, Vulcan USA, or Norvul for the two towns it is between.
Norway Mountain has announced that they will cease operations and will not open for the 2012-13 season. We will monitor the situation and we hope we do not have to move Norway to our “lost” areas section.
From the owners of Norway Mountain:
Thank You for 20 Great Years
I would like to thank every one who has made Norway Mountain such a pleasure to own an operate over the last twenty years. My wife and I truly enjoyed watching this ski hill become part of winter fun for residents of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. We could never have done it with out the support of a great staff, the city of Norway, Michigan, and our fantastic customers!
But all things change, and it was not without a lot of thought that we decided not to open this year. Our lives are taking a different direction and while we will miss all of the excitement and joy Norway Mountain has brought us over these great twenty years, it is time for us to move on. Thanks again to everyone who has made this one of the best experiences of our lives.
Mike & Mary Gotstein
However, Norway Mountain’s new owners are operating the area for the 2014-15 season. They had a big open-house on July 5, 2014 and got the Thor lift running on July 7. They are currently (mid-December ’14) open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; and have a great Winter Carnival scheduled for the Xmas holidays.
