In the early 1950’s, the Toledo Ski Club had a small lodge and a rope tow at Prospect Hill, the tallest hill in the Irish Hills south of Jackson. I have found references to their outings there in the Toledo Blade during the 1951 and 1952 period. The club also had a lodge building at the foot of Boyne Mountain during this period.
In 1955, Richard Carl Schaefer of Toledo purchased a 90 acre sheep farm at the foot of Prospect Hill and renamed it Valley Farm. In 1952, he had started the Hob Haven Day Camp in Perrysburg, OH, later moving it to Maumee, OH. He moved some of the camp operations to Valley Hill.
On Dec. 23, 1960, The (Toledo) Blade printed an ad for skiing at Valley Farm, Prospect Hill, in Irish Hills. They had a tow rope, rental equipment and a snack bar. Directions were Rt 223 15 mi. past Adrian, right on Round Lake Rd., right on Vischer Rd. to Prospect Hills Rd.
As camp operations expanded, they changed the name of the camp to the Sauk Valley Sports Camp, and it is still operating under that name. Today, the Sauk Valley Resort offers meeting and banquet facilities as well as a sports camp specializing in Field Hockey, Soccer, and Cross Country running. No skiing or other winter activities are mentioned.
Much of this information was from the obituary of Mr. Schaefer, who passed away on Nov. 28, 2008.
When did Valley Farm or Sauk Valley close their tow? Was this the same location as the Prospect Hill area run by the Toledo Ski Club?
