Ski World – Buchanan

WMR sent a comment that he used to ski at Royal Valley which later became Ski World in Buchanan in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He sent a link to a Chicago Tribune snow report listing the Ski World area and its address. The address puts it on the only hill near town, just west of the river, uphill from the trailer park. The lodge was apparently at the top. The satellite view doesn’t show anything like the remains of slopes. I haven’t found any further mentions on the web.

Karen Vocke sent a link to a couple pictures of Ski World she found on Panoramia, They were posted by Shylos10 and show a skier doing a tip stand on a narrow trail through the woods. One of the pix seems to show a double chairlift running overhead and a Poma or T-Bar running up another hill in a different directions Check it out here.

If you have any information about skiing at Ski World or Royal Valley, please leave a comment or send us a message via the instructions on the About MILSAP page.

I miss Ski World so much. The first snowboard i ever touched was at this place. It was the winter of 1989. I had a friend who had a camcorder that recorded black and white on a tape cassette, We recorded our first snow boarding experience on it. We fell the entire way down the hill. Tape was black and white filmed at night. One big blur. Outpost sports had a small seasonal store at the place. (rented the snowboard from them) The owner of the store would have info on this great little ski place. I took my high school sweetheart here once I learned how to be an avid boarder. I remember looking down from the light and you could see the lights along the river in the light snow. I lived in La Porte, IN and it was about a 45 minute drive. I miss this place so much. I am glad I found the post on it because I could not find it on google earth. I had even called the local chamber of commerce to see if they remembered the address so I could mark it on me maps of found childhood memories. I only remember 2 double lifts. One going down south of the little building at the top of the hill and one east of the retention pond at the bottom. I think I remember snow making coming out of the pond at the bottom. I miss this place so much I almost cried when I saw the 2 pictures someone had posted.
    Thank you,
    Dan

I moved to Buchanan in 1989. Ski World was still open at the time. A number of years later a good friend of mines parents purchased a good portion of the area including the lodge. It is still standing, though has been remodeled. The building where you got your equipment rentals is also still standing and remodeled.I remember one year in high school going there and tubing. Lots of fun. If there were a couple more hills and it consistently snowed, perhaps it still would be open to this day.
