Mt. Kimberly – Marenisco

Anthony Grudnoski reported that the Ironwood Daily Globe listed Mt. Kimberly as open for skiing on Feb. 21, 1957, along with Mt. Zion and Porcupine Mountains. Apparently Mt. Kimberly was a community ski area in Marenisco Twp in Gogebic County. It was created sometime in the late 1950’s and operated until 1969, when on Sept. 24, 1969 the Wakefield News reported that the Marenisco Twp board voted to discontinue support of the area.

I have not been able to determine the location of Mt. Kimberly, although US-2 is locally designated as Kimberly Rd. in the vicinity of the town of Marenisco. If you have any information about where Mt. Kimberly was located, when it opened, what types of lifts or tows they had, how many slopes there were, or any reminiscences of skiing there, please let us know.
